Rose Rosette Disease

The Rose Rosette Disease (RRD) is a disease believed to be caused by the recently identified Rose rosette virus, has been spreading through much of the wild rose population of the Midwestern, Southern and Eastern United States for years. RRD is a major concern to the nursery industry and many home gardeners because it is known to be lethal to the wild multiflora rose and potentially lethal to many ornamental rose species and cultivars. It has long been known that the eriophyid mite, Phyllocoptes fructiphilus, spreads the disease, but the likely viral pathogen was only recently identifies.

Symptoms of RRD are highly variable, depending on the species. If you notice a decline in the health and vigor of your ornamental roses, or distorted growth, please give us a call for an evaluation and treatment.

Early detection of RRD is the key to effective control. Any suspect roses should be removed and destroyed immediately. If possible, r. multiflora plants should be eliminated from the vicinity.
